It’s in the Cards

A structured social night for people in their 30s and 40s+, where the cards break the ice and help you skip the small talk.

Most guests come solo.

How It's in the Cards Works

It's a social night built around a simple card game that gives everyone something to talk about. No awkward icebreakers, no pressure to talk about yourself. Just compare cards, trade, and see where the night takes you!

1. Get your card

When you arrive, you'll receive a random card with a Christmas wish on it.

For example:

"Dear Santa, for Christmas I'd like to be able to eat whatever I want and never gain weight."

Write your name on the back. This is your starting card!

2. Compare and trade

Find out what wishes other guests have. Which would you rather have? Which do you think is worth more?

Every card has a secret point value based on a survey we conducted before the event.

Your goal is to end up with a card you think is worth a lot of points.

You must trade away your starting card at least once, but you can trade as many times as you like. Both people must agree to the trade.

Remember to sign the back of each new card you receive. You can only hold one card at a time.

3. Form a team of four

As you're meeting people and comparing cards, start thinking about who you'd like to team up with.

Before the deadline, find three other guests who each have a different card from yours.

Come up with a team name and submit your four cards together at the registration desk.

And don't worry if you haven't found a team. We'll help you join one!

Your team's score is the combined point value of all four cards.

4. The big reveal!

Once all teams have submitted their cards, we'll reveal the secret rankings and point values.

Find out which wishes were the most popular, how many points your team earned, and where your team finished!

The highest-scoring teams win prizes from our prize table. We might even have a little something for the person holding the lowest-ranked card!

How are the points decided?

Before the event, we ask our Head Out Toronto community to complete a series of "Would You Rather?" questions.

For example, would you rather:

A. Eat whatever you want and never gain weight.

B. Choose what you dream about every night.

We collect everyone's answers and rank the wishes based on how often they're chosen.

If there are 30 different wishes, the highest-ranked wish is worth 30 points, the next is worth 29, and so on, all the way down to 1 point.

The rankings stay secret until the end of the night!

There's no right or wrong answer. It's all based on what people would rather have.

The evening's schedule

  • 6:30 PM: Doors open, check-in and receive your card

  • 7:00 PM: Card trading begins

  • 8:00 PM: Form your team and submit your cards

  • 8:30 PM: Secret rankings revealed, winners announced and prizes awarded

  • Until 10:00 PM: Stick around, enjoy a drink and keep the conversations going!

One last thing...

The game gives everyone a reason to start conversations, but winning isn't really the point.

You don't need to be competitive, know anyone beforehand, or be particularly outgoing. Just come with an open mind, see what cards people have, and have fun with it.
