What makes a good card?

I’ll let you guess. What’s the most important part of a Cards night?

Yup, the cards!

And it’s time now to get working on those for the Nightmares event.

It’s not just a matter of coming up with random “Would you rather” scenarios. These card scenarios are carefully curated.

There are three things we look for in a card. It needs to do at least one of the following:

  1. Be interesting

  2. Be funny

  3. Reveal something about yourself

Interesting means something thought provoking. Something that actually makes you stop and wonder what that scenario would be like.

Funny is exactly that. Something that makes you laugh when you read it.

But #3 is the most important one, and it’s what we try to build most of the cards around.

The card should reveal something about the person holding it.

The entire night is based around conversation with others, so the best scenarios are the ones that give people somewhere to go after answering.

For example:

“Be required to act as your sibling’s servant for the next five years.”

That can lead to a discussion about family, siblings, or which sibling would enjoy this way too much.

Most physical pain scenarios, on the other hand, are a no-go.

“Cut off your pinky finger.”

For most people, that’s an immediate yes or no, with nowhere to expand.

Scenarios that may lead somewhere too dark are also cut, out of respect for our guests.

“Have all crimes against you be legal for the next 24 hours and everyone knows it” was one such card.

For many women especially, that isn’t a fun hypothetical.

We literally go through hundreds of scenarios before putting the best ones to a vote, where they get cut down even further.

Time to start thinking about those nightmares!
